Hunter territoriality creates refuges for threatened primates

چکیده
Summary Unsustainable hunting threatens biodiversity in the tropics through removal of key seed-dispersing frugivorous primates. Traditionally, Amazon Basin was managed hunter territoriality, with threat social sanctions for overexploitation. We examined territoriality and differential prey selection as alternative hypotheses to central-place foraging. Territoriality occurred beyond common grounds, which were on major rivers immediately surrounding community. Hunters displayed selectivity choice, 50% hunters not The combination means that over 22% hunted area Sucusari river basin could be considered primate refuge. Of remaining area, 16% relatively little by hunters. suggest against primates creates refuges, mitigating effects sustained pressure contributing conservation these species.

Community structure of fishes inhabiting aquatic refuges in a threatened Karst wetland and its implications for ecosystem management
We illustrate the importance of subsurface refuges for conservation of aquatic fauna with our studies of karstic wetlands in Everglades National Park, Florida, USA. Managers have proposed that water levels there should not fall more than 46 cm below ground level for more than 90 days annually. In four areas, 84% of solution holes were less than 46 cm deep and holes deeper than 1m were rare (<3 ...
متن کاملIsolated Refuges for Surviving Global Catastrophes
A variety of global catastrophes threaten the survival of human civilization. For many of these catastrophes, isolated refuges could keep some people alive and enable them to rebuild civilization in the post-catastrophe world. This paper examines the potential importance of refuges and what it would take to make them succeed. The successful refuge will have a variety of qualities, including iso...
متن کاملHunter-gatherers and other primates as prey, predators, and competitors of snakes.
Relationships between primates and snakes are of widespread interest from anthropological, psychological, and evolutionary perspectives, but surprisingly, little is known about the dangers that serpents have posed to people with prehistoric lifestyles and nonhuman primates. Here, we report ethnographic observations of 120 Philippine Agta Negritos when they were still preliterate hunter-gatherer...
متن کاملOccupation Dynamics and Impacts of Damselfish Territoriality on Recovering Populations of the Threatened Staghorn Coral, Acropora cervicornis
Large-scale coral reef restoration is needed to help recover structure and function of degraded coral reef ecosystems and mitigate continued coral declines. In situ coral propagation and reef restoration efforts have scaled up significantly in past decades, particularly for the threatened Caribbean staghorn coral, Acropora cervicornis, but little is known about the role that native competitors ...
متن کاملDo threatened hosts have fewer parasites? A comparative study in primates.
1. Parasites and infectious diseases have become a major concern in conservation biology, in part because they can trigger or accelerate species or population declines. Focusing on primates as a well-studied host clade, we tested whether the species richness and prevalence of parasites differed between threatened and non-threatened host species. 2. We collated data on 386 species of parasites (...
